About automatic slingshots

What is an automatic slingshot?

An automatic slingshot — also called a semi-auto or auto-loading slingshot — uses a gravity-fed magazine to seat the next round into the pouch by itself. You draw and release; the mechanism reloads. There is no hand-loading between shots, which means you never break your stance or lose your sight picture mid-session.

Is it actually automatic, or semi-automatic?

Semi-automatic, strictly. One draw, one shot. What is automated is the loading, not the firing. The magazine feeds the next steel ball into the magnetic pouch the instant the previous one leaves.

How does the magnetic pouch work?

A rare-earth magnet is sewn into the centre of each pouch. When the magazine drops a 9mm carbon steel ball, the magnet catches it and holds it centred and square. That is what makes hands-free reloading possible — without the magnet the ball would simply fall out.

Ammunition and consumables

What ammunition does it take?

9mm carbon steel balls. The magazine, the pouch magnet and the frame channel are all dimensioned around that size. Using glass marbles, clay, lead or the wrong diameter steel will cause feed failures and can damage the mechanism — and non-magnetic ammunition will not seat in the pouch at all.

How many rounds does a magazine hold?

13 rounds per CNC-machined ammo tube. Spare magazines are the single most worthwhile add-on if you shoot longer sessions.

How often do bands need replacing?

Bands are the consumable on any slingshot — expect to replace them long before anything else wears. Lifespan depends on draw length, temperature and how often you shoot. Inspect before every session and replace at the first sign of fraying, cracking, cloudiness or thinning near the pouch. A band that fails at full draw is genuinely dangerous. What is the difference between D-loop and node-knot bandsets?

The yellow D-loop is designed for use with a mechanical release aid — it distributes pull evenly so the pouch opens symmetrically. The green node knot is for hand-drawn shooting. Never use knot-style bands with a mechanical release. The load path is wrong for it and you risk equipment failure and ricochet.

Accuracy and setup

Why do I need a mechanical release aid?

Because fingers introduce torque. When you pinch a pouch and let go, your grip twists the pouch a fraction unpredictably, and that fraction is the main source of left-right scatter. A caliper-style release converts the draw into a straight linear pull with a clean break — the same reason compound archers use them. It is the biggest single accuracy upgrade in the category.

My groups are opening up. What should I check?

In order: band condition first (by far the most common cause), then ammunition consistency, then whether your draw length is actually repeating, then pouch alignment. If all four are good and it still scatters, check the frame for flex or a loose fastener.

Can I mount a sight or optic?

Yes. The rails are Picatinny-compatible, so standard optics, lasers and lights fit without modification. The frame also has an integrated centre channel that works as a mechanical sight with nothing mounted at all.

Do your parts fit 3D-printed frames?

What maintenance does it actually need?

Keep the magazine tube and feed channel clean and free of grit, check fasteners periodically, replace nylon guide wheels when they show wear grooves, and inspect bands every session. That is close to all of it — there is very little to go wrong on a machined aluminium frame.

Is it legal where I live?
